Spazzcast #4 Doby Watson – The Social Media Non-Marketer
January 6th, 2010 | Published in DIY, Download, Marketing, Music Business, Spazzcast | 2 Comments

In this spazzcast Doby Watson tells why he doesn’t use social media. This is not the recommended Music Spazz business model for musicians who are working to build their career, but for Doby privacy and musical expression take precedence over career. As an honest fan who would like to see longevity in his music, it is my hope that his career perspective will change with the coming season.

i don’t think he should have to use any social media. If anything, that degrades my perception of the quality of the type of work he is making. I am glad to hear someone who actually respects himself as an artist, and not as a mere entertainer, exploited for the sake of others. If music was looked at, more like visual arts, it is taken as a grain of salt, those who love it, will listen, and those who don’t will walk past. You don’t need to shove yourself in peoples faces, it gets annoying.

Austin – good thoughts. It definitely can be done in a pushy way, which is disconcerting, I agree. However, the majority of people are lazy and want “the good stuff” hand fed to them, they aren’t willing to work to find it. If you’re making music for yourself, then by all means, stay in living rooms with your guitar. If you want to dedicate enough time to your art that you don’t have time for a job, then you are going to either have to come into some money or sell your art. Selling your art requires, at least, some compromise. I believe you can make yourself available for those who care without whoring yourself out to the digital man.
